Nintendo Promises Switch Versions Will Still Work After Upgrading To Switch 2 Editions
Briefly

Nintendo has announced that select Switch games, including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Kirby and the Forgotten Land, will receive paid Switch 2 Editions. Users can still play their original games on the legacy console; however, new features and benefits exclusive to the Switch 2 Editions will only be accessible on the upgraded hardware. Notable upgrades for Zelda titles include improved graphics and additional functionalities, while Kirby will introduce a new storyline. It's also worth mentioning that some games are receiving free updates for Switch 2 compatibility.
After you upgrade, the original Nintendo Switch game can still be played on Nintendo Switch, though the features and content of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition can only be played on Nintendo Switch 2.
Two Legend of Zelda games--Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom--will boast better frame rates and resolutions, HDR support, and a new Zelda notes app functionality.
