Nier Creator Yoko Taro Says His Games Keep Getting Canceled
"I often get told stuff like, 'Why aren't you making a new sequel to Nier' or 'Yoko Taro isn't doing anything,' but that's because recently, a lot of projects I was involved in got discontinued midway through development,"
"I've actually been working on some stuff, it's just that it never ended up seeing the light of the day. I got paid for it, so I personally have no issues with that, but people seem to think that I haven't been doing anything just because none of the work I've done is being released."
Several recent projects involving Yoko Taro were discontinued during development, preventing their release despite continued work. The canceled projects resulted in payment to Taro but produced no public games. Taro prefers projects be canceled rather than released if they fail to meet the standards of his earlier titles. Nier Reincarnation was shut down in 2024, while two Nier tie-in books were released that year. Hiroyuki Kobayashi indicated a possible collaboration with Taro and composer Keiichi Okabe on a new project. Taro also predicted that AI could replace human game developers within fifty years.
