Microsoft's Forza Motorsport developer hit hard by Xbox cuts
Briefly

Microsoft announced today that it will lay off as many as 9,000 employees, including more than 70 from Turn 10 Studios. The layoffs are described as impacting the vast majority of the studio. Alongside Turn 10, other cancellations include Rare's Everwild, Zenimax Online Studios' Blackbird MMORPG, and the new Perfect Dark game. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer mentioned that these changes aim to enhance agility and strategic focus in gaming. Previous studio closures include those behind Redfall and Hi-Fi Rush.
"To position Gaming for enduring success and allow us to focus on strategic growth areas, we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft's lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness," Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer says in a memo to employees.
The cuts were made on a call with Microsoft HR representatives this morning, and are hitting the 'vast majority' of the studio.
Managers at Turn 10 didn't discuss project plans on the call this morning, and Microsoft didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the situation.
Microsoft is canceling its new Perfect Dark game that it announced in 2020, according to an internal memo from Xbox Games Studio head Matt Booty today.
