Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls' fusion of anime and comic book visuals blows away the Marvel fighting games of Capcom's past
"Even before Marvel became the pop culture juggernaut it is today, its iconic superheroes have had a strong lineage in games. Most notable were the fighting games made by Capcom from the 90s, initially with 1994's X-Men: Children of the Atom before crossing over with the publisher's own game characters, giving us the beloved Marvel vs Capcom series."
"It's then a huge surprise to see that pattern disrupted with Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, an upcoming tag fighter that's not only being published by Sony in partnership with Marvel Games but being developed by Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ studio Arc System Works. It's a much needed refresh, and based on my multiple runbacks to the developer's booth, the demo was undoubtedly one of my highlights at Evo France this weekend (also see the latest indie game news in our Indie Dev Insider series)."
Marvel's superheroes had a strong lineage in video games long before the franchise reached its current pop culture dominance. Capcom shaped that lineage in the 1990s with fighting games beginning with 1994's X-Men: Children of the Atom and later the Marvel vs Capcom crossover series. The pattern changes with Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, a tag fighter published by Sony alongside Marvel Games and developed by Arc System Works. Arc System Works brings experience from Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ, delivering a fresh take on Marvel fighters. A demo shown at Evo France generated strong positive impressions and stood out among recent fighting game previews.
