In the latest episode of HBO's The Last of Us, viewers were shocked by Joel's murder, a scene familiar to gamers. Unlike the game, the show emphasized the mourning period in Jackson, showcasing Tommy and Ellie's grief. This was the first time Joel's house was depicted with a focus on his loss, affecting Ellie as she confronts her emotions. Showrunners Mazin and Druckmann consider changes to Ellie's narrative motivation, introducing new scenes to enhance the story's depth, including a town hall meeting that alters how Ellie decides to pursue revenge.
There's this really beautiful scene where Tommy comes in, and he has to clean up his brother's body. I call it the one-man wake. It was definitely a very long night shooting that scene.
Ellie's headspace at the beginning of Episode 3 is dark. It's like the stages of grief, right? I think she's so broken and numb, and then becomes incredibly angry.
