In a surprising development twist, Jack Black, who voices Steve in the upcoming A Minecraft Movie, was initially set to portray a talking pig. Mojang's senior director of original content, Torfi Frans Olafsson, revealed that the decision to switch Black to Steve came late in production to leverage his expertise as a host. This casting choice was influenced by audience feedback suggesting that Black’s personality significantly shaped the character. Black's enthusiasm for Minecraft was evident, as he logged over 100 hours of gameplay, particularly enjoying elements like lapis lazuli, which he wanted to feature in the movie.
"It was very, very, very late in the development where we had the idea to switch it to become Steve, because we needed an expert and host," Olafsson told Variety.
"This is literally him interpreting this character and what it means to him," Olafsson said.
"He was just completely manic, hoarding stuff in the mines, searching for lapis lazuli because he liked the way it sounds," Olafsson said.
"Can I talk about lapis lazuli in the movie?" were repeated requests from Black, according to Olafsson.
