The game is vastly different from what it was at release... it has a lot of life left in it, as evidenced by the fact that it's still receiving major updates six years later. The community ethos of the game is that everyone is just there to have fun.
Add to this the new expeditions system... it's a four-player asynchronous multiplayer mode where each player can undertake their own unique quest throughout the Expedition.
