At CES 2025, the HDMI Forum, Inc. announced HDMI 2.2, which boasts a significant bandwidth increase to 96 Gbps, enhancing capabilities for high resolution and frame rates significantly.
The new 'Ultra96' insignia cables will support 4K at up to 480 frames per second, making HDMI 2.2 suitable for advanced gaming needs and ensuring longevity across A/V industries.
Although HDMI 2.2 promises enhanced performance, display and gaming manufacturers must adopt the specification in their products. The actual market availability of devices supporting HDMI 2.2 remains uncertain.
HDMI 2.2 enables uncompressed 4K at 240 fps and 8K at 60 fps with full chroma formats. However, higher frame rates and resolutions will require compression.
