Harry Potter Game Pitch From Saints Row Dev Didn't Work, Even Though They Brought Owls
Briefly

Volition, developers of Saints Row, attempted to create a Harry Potter game demo in 1999 before the movie was released. The demo featured Hagrid and Harry in a top-down RPG format, reflecting the team's passion for the source material. Unfortunately, their pitch to gain rights to the Harry Potter franchise was unsuccessful, as Electronic Arts ultimately secured the rights and produced various game adaptations over the years. Recent titles in the franchise include Hogwarts Legacy, which became a major success in 2023, outpacing even Call of Duty.
The demo included a sequence where Hagrid and Harry Potter are walking around a cobblestone area, with players able to switch between both characters in a top-down RPG setup.
Borman said executives from the game developer and publisher attended a pitch meeting in which at least some of the top bosses "came dressed in robes and had owls with them" in an apparent bid to help win the rights.
