Sucker Punch, known for its game Ghost of Tsushima, has faced criticism regarding its cultural portrayal of Japan. Acknowledging this, they undertook a research trip to Hokkaido, meeting cultural advisors and foraging for vegetables to enhance authenticity. Co-creative director Nate Fox emphasized the need for cultural accuracy, expressing gratitude for feedback from colleagues in Tokyo. The outcome includes the incorporation of a new game mechanic—vegetable foraging. While the game setting is fictional, the studio aims for an authentic feel rooted in real experiences as they create Ghost of Yotei, launching on PlayStation 5 on October 2.
Sucker Punch is an American company and we are well aware that we don't naturally come equipped with the cultural knowledge to bring feudal Japan to life,
We wanted players to be able to share the experience we were lucky enough to have experienced.
While our version of Hokkaido is fictional, the feeling of authenticity we strive to create has roots in those real world experiences.
