"Delulu is exactly what you think it would be if you're familiar with both Fortnite and internet slang. Cutesy shorthand for "delusional," this new mode sees you potentially team up with--and likely betray, as there can only be one winner--anyone you see thanks to proximity chat. As you near another player, you can form a sort of temporary group chat to strategize as you play."
"Unfortunately, this new feature has caused an influx of player complaints of discrimination and harassment. According to an IGN report, players on the game's subreddit have shared mixed experiences, with many discussing the bigotry they faced because of "their accent, their age or because they're a woman." Developer Epic Games took to X on September 21 to remind players to report chat that violates community rules, stating that "thousands" have been banned."
Fortnite launched a new weekend-only battle royale mode called Delulu that uses proximity voice chat so players can talk and temporarily team up with anyone they encounter. The mode enables ad-hoc group chats and spontaneous coordination, creating social gameplay opportunities for solo players. The proximity chat also led to increased incidents of discrimination and harassment targeting players for accent, age, or gender. Epic Games reported banning "thousands" of accounts and urged players to report violating voice conversations through the in-game Voice Chat reporting tools. Delulu is currently active only on weekends, with the next window scheduled for September 26–29.
