Matt Firor founded ZeniMax Online in 2007 and helped turn The Elder Scrolls Online into a leading MMORPG. He resigned last summer after Microsoft-led layoffs at the studio and cancellation of Project Blackbird, the ambitious online multiplayer game he had long sought to create. He publicly confirmed on January 1 that Blackbird's cancellation led to his resignation. Many veteran developers were impacted; some formed Sackbird Studios to pursue a multiplayer game with internal funding and full creative control. Bloomberg described Blackbird as an ambitious loot shooter blending Destiny and Blade Runner with MMORPG quest structure; Phil Spencer reportedly praised an internal build.
