Epic says its Fortnite V-bucks price hike is a 'direct correlation' to operating costs
"The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we're raising prices to help pay the bills. It's pure operating costs of running a business, and that was the main push. We're going to continue to, as a business, focus on creating amazing games and gameplay, but the price hike is a direct correlation to the operating costs."
"We're just investing in growing the ecosystem a lot. There are a lot of amazing things that'll be rolling out in the next, like, 6 to 12 months that, I think, when you look back, you'll understand what's been going on."
Epic Games announced a price increase for Fortnite's V-bucks currency, effective March 19th alongside a new season launch. The $8.99 V-bucks pack will now contain 800 V-bucks instead of 1,000, with similar reductions across other pack tiers. Epic attributed the increase to rising operating costs of running the business. When pressed for specifics at GDC Festival of Gaming, executives declined to provide percentage or dollar figures for cost increases. Andre Balta, senior director of ecosystem growth, stated the price hike directly correlates to operating costs. Steve Allison, GM of the Epic Games Store, mentioned significant ecosystem investments planned for the next 6-12 months. This marks Epic's second V-bucks price increase since 2023, and the announcement has generated user complaints.
