End of Abyss is when Metroidvania meets space horror
Briefly

End of Abyss, the latest from the creators of Little Nightmares 2, blends an atmospheric sci-fi theme with Metroidvania exploration elements. The game is characterized by its isometric layout, allowing fluid shooting and movement, emulating a dark, immersive experience reminiscent of Alien. Players can scan their surroundings for information and hidden items, collecting resources and facing various enemies. The demo showed off engaging combat mechanics, including a forgiving respawn system, while emphasizing exploration and unlocking new abilities, ensuring players can always progress despite setbacks.
Mattias Ottvall, co-creator of the game, praised my tendency to scan everything, which netted me several secret item caches during my demo playthrough.
Fortunately, End of Abyss' isometric layout is paired with the ability to move and shoot with each analog stick.
After some early teething issues (scanning an alien zombie instead of shooting it down), the control setup eventually became second nature.
Even better, with a game that centers on exploration, when you come across something that you can't yet interact with, any doors unlocked and skills gained are saved.
