With Elden Ring Nightreign set to release on May 30, director Junya Ishizaki discussed the decision to include classic Dark Souls bosses in the spin-off. Ishizaki highlighted the practical need for diverse bosses and a personal enjoyment of reviving these characters. While fan theories speculate links between the games, Ishizaki clarified the choice stemmed primarily from gameplay requirements rather than any intended multiverse connection. This reveals FromSoftware's trend of efficiently leveraging their previous work while engaging loyal fans.
The primary reason for these existing bosses in Nightreign is from a gameplay perspective. We needed a lot of different bosses... so we wanted to leverage what we deemed appropriate from our previous titles.
I thought it'd be kind of fun to incorporate old bosses from the Dark Souls franchise into Nightreign as part of fan service and gameplay.
Fans immediately began theorycrafting lore reasons for these throwbacks, questioning if this evidence was a FromSoft multiverse.
Ishizaki’s comments suggest that the use of Dark Souls bosses was more about gameplay needs than a deeper narrative or multiverse connection.
