Crytek has announced it is pausing the development of Crysis 4 amid significant financial challenges, resulting in layoffs of about 60 staff members, or 15% of its workforce. While Hunt: Showdown 1896 continues to thrive with peak player counts, the company acknowledges that it cannot sustain operations in its previous manner. Crytek's financial troubles are a recurring theme, with past reports indicating significant issues with employee payments. The studio's future direction seems uncertain as it diverts attention towards Hunt: Showdown while keeping Crysis 4 in limbo for now.
"Like so many of our peers, we aren't immune to the complex, unfavorable market dynamics that have hit our industry these past several years," a Crytek representative wrote.
Despite the success of Hunt: Showdown 1896, Crytek said it can't 'continue as before' and 'remain financially sustainable.'
Crysis 4 was announced in 2022 as being in early development, accompanied by a teaser video calling it a 'truly next-gen shooter.'
The company has shared very few details on the game since then despite looking for 'people who will truly shape the future of the franchise.'
