Buffy the Vampire Slayer is coming back to TV with a reboot
Briefly

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is reportedly making a comeback with a reboot-sequel series on Hulu, which will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her iconic role as Buffy, but with the focus shifting to a new slayer. Gellar will appear in a recurring capacity rather than as the lead. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is set to direct the pilot, with the Zuckerman sisters as showrunners. Joss Whedon, the original creator, is not involved in this project, marking a significant shift for the franchise.
Gellar has previously dismissed returning to Buffy, but left the door open for another slayer to take up the mantle. "I am all for them continuing the story, because there's the story of female empowerment," Gellar told SFX magazine in 2023.
Zhao has described Buffy the Vampire Slayer as "a very important show for me... Vampires, witchcraft, teen romance, I mean what else do you want?"
According to Variety, while Gellar will return as Buffy, the series will focus on a new slayer. Gellar would appear in a recurring role, not as its lead star.
The series amassed a fervent fanbase, thanks to its humor, LGBT themes, melodramatic twists, and memorable villains.
