Defense technology has transformed into a lucrative investment field for venture capitalists, with a significant focus on dual-use applications. Darkstar, an Estonian VC firm, specializes in military solutions, diverging from the trend by investing in purely military applications to support Europe's rearming efforts. The firm actively aids startups in establishing compliant operations in NATO countries, particularly for Ukrainian teams. Darkstar seeks to raise €25 million to invest in early-stage rounds, usually between €500k and €1 million, already backing innovative startups like FarSight Vision and Deftak.
"This is very critical, not only today but for the next 10 years," said its cofounder and general partner Ragnar Sass.
"In any company which wants to be part of European procurement or even grants, the operational side has to be perfect," Sass said.
Darkstar intends to focus on pre-seed and seed rounds, with a usual check size of €500k to €1 million.
Darkstar breaks from the trend by sometimes investing in purely military applications, aiming to help rearm Europe with combat-proven solutions.
