The indictments come as the United States has been cracking down on Russian efforts to influence the election, especially through content from Russian broadcasters.
Mr. Simes, who was a Virginia resident but now lives in Russia, is a regular commentator for Channel One Russia, receiving over $1 million for his work.
The Justice Department charged both Simeses with violating the International Emergency Powers Act through their work for Channel One, alongside other serious allegations.
Ms. Simes was involved in money laundering and aiding Russian oligarch Aleksandr Udodov in evading U.S. sanctions by purchasing art and antiques.
