Lorna Simpson's exploration of art and history took an exciting turn when she discovered a meteorite on eBay, which inspired her latest exhibition titled "Earth & Sky." With a price tag around six thousand dollars, the meteorite's arrival spurred Simpson to screen-print meteorite photos onto fibreglass panels. This project was influenced by a photo in an antique geology book, linking cosmic phenomena with historical racial narratives—specifically the fate of a sharecropper in the 1920s. Her innovative approach has garnered attention, culminating in a work featured in the Metropolitan Museum's upcoming retrospective of her paintings.
I look for an image that's already crazy, and then just do a little bit more,” Simpson explained, highlighting her artistic process of enhancing pre-existing narratives.
Inspired by a photo in an antique geology textbook, Simpson's work explores the intersection of cosmic events and racial histories in her latest exhibition.
