A new two-lane bike lane will (finally!) connect Union Square and the Brooklyn Bridge
"The main improvement is a long-awaited, continuous north-south bike route from Prince Street to 15th Street, linking the Brooklyn Bridge area to Union Square along Lafayette Street and Fourth Avenue."
"Sidewalks on Fourth Avenue near Union Square will be widened with painted extensions, and a Citi Bike station that now blocks the sidewalk on Lafayette Street will be moved into the street to clear the way for people walking."
The New York City Department of Transportation is implementing bike and pedestrian upgrades in Lower Manhattan, starting this spring. A continuous north-south bike route will connect the Brooklyn Bridge area to Union Square, with the bike lane being widened to accommodate two-way traffic. Additional crosstown bike lanes will be added, and pedestrian spaces will be expanded. These improvements aim to enhance safety and accessibility for both cyclists and pedestrians in anticipation of the influx of visitors during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
