A group committed to preserving the historical essence of the Metro Theater has announced an agreement to purchase the landmark building for $7 million, pending full funding by year's end.
Ira Deutchman, a key figure in the nonprofit, revealed that they have already secured funding for about one-third of the purchase price, relying on additional contributions for the rest.
Deutchman highlighted the community's enthusiasm for the project, stating, 'I'd never worked on a project before where every single person I tell about it, their response is, Oh, that is so needed,' showcasing the project's widespread local support.
With hopes to raise an estimated $15 million to $25 million for the theater's restoration, the Upper West Side Cinema Center is tapping into nostalgia among former residents and is preparing for a significant community-driven effort.
