Shenzhen University Affiliated Nanshan Kindergarten underwent a transformation guided by the Montessori philosophy, emphasizing the educational value of the environment. Initially characterized by rigid geometric volumes and insufficient natural light, the design team restructured the layout by integrating multiple courtyards and flexible play spaces. This involved creating active rooftop areas and optimizing facades for better light exposure. The introduction of natural materials and innovative cantilevered eaves not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal but also improved spatial interaction, making the environment conducive to children's learning and exploration.
The design team implemented systematic spatial restructuring strategies to transform this modernist architecture into a child-oriented educational environment.
By extending corridor spaces into courtyards, semi-enclosed transitional spaces under the eaves were created, enhancing courtyard identity while addressing shading requirements.
