Finally deciding to end my UX (and tech) career, once and for all
"The most interesting thing is, making the choice to end my career wasn't a choice I made directly. To arrive here, I had to make a series of decisions that, in the end, would mean that the only direction, feasibly, would be to go that way, or, to be more precise, a direction that was neither tech nor creative career - I would have to exit the tech world, white collar, and all of its promises and predilections - forever."
"Now, I'm working two jobs as a luggage handler and a server at an airport. Reality often doesn't see us doing what we thought we would do. Reality, in a sense, exists outside of what we see - our human nature twists reality in such a way that we confirm biases - confirmation biases and the sunk cost fallacy come to mind. We want to succeed, and we want to believe that with just enough effort, we will."
I ended my pursuit of UX as a paid profession and exited the tech white-collar world entirely. The decision emerged through a series of smaller choices that funneled toward leaving both tech and creative career paths. I ran out of patience for the white-collar world's way of doing things. A few years ago I worked as a UX designer; now I hold two airport jobs as a luggage handler and a server. Reality often diverges from expectations; human nature and cognitive biases, especially confirmation bias and the sunk cost fallacy, distort perception and sustain the belief that more effort will guarantee success.
