At Universal's new theme park, plants outnumber rides
Briefly

Epic Universe, Universal's first new theme park in over 20 years, features a unique design with lush greenery and winding pathways in its entrance, Celestial Park. This area serves as a serene contrast to typical theme park settings filled with commercialism. Executive creative director Steve Tatham emphasizes the focus on guest experience, aiming to create a calmer atmosphere where visitors can enjoy the environment as an attraction itself. The design draws inspiration from historic world's fairs, seeking to reset not only expectations for the brand but the amusement park experience as a whole, incorporating over 400,000 plants throughout the park.
"[It's] where we've put the 'park' back in theme park," says Steve Tatham, Epic Universe's executive creative director and lead designer.
"We focus on our guests and their experience, and we didn't want it to have as much hardscape as some other parks. We wanted to have a lot more greenery," Tatham says.
"Some people want to come and just absorb the environment, so we wanted to create something for everybody," he says.
Celestial Park was envisioned as both a connective spine and a calmer respite from the rides and experiences in the rest of the theme park.
