As designers, we've strayed from our foundational principles in AI product design, leading to a crisis where interface uniformity prevails. From chat bubbles to sidebar histories, numerous AI platforms—like ChatGPT and Claude—employ nearly identical layouts. This pattern is not an example of user-centered design but rather a failure to innovate and respond thoughtfully to user needs, marking a troubling trend within the industry. Our complacency in accepting this design model must be addressed if we are to progress in the UX field.
As product designers, we pride ourselves on solving complex user problems. Yet, when faced with AI products, we’ve abandoned our design principles.
The reality is we find ourselves in a design crisis where the default solution is a chat box, leading to uniformity and lack of innovation.
