Alligator Alcatraz is a migrant detention facility in Florida designed to support Donald Trump's deportation agenda. Built in just eight days, it exemplifies Governor Ron DeSantis's extensive efforts to establish a state-coordinated law enforcement system aimed at deporting undocumented migrants. The facility is equipped to house up to 3,000 detainees and is the largest of its kind in the nation, costing $450 million annually to operate. DeSantis emphasized the facility as a model for other states to follow in enhancing immigration enforcement efforts.
Trump toured the detention center Tuesday, along with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, both of whom heaped praise on how Florida has led the nation in arresting, detaining and deporting undocumented migrants.
Alligator Alcatraz, which will eventually hold up to 3,000 detainees, is being called the largest immigrant detention facility in the country.
DeSantis seized the land from Miami-Dade County using a continuation of an emergency order he issued in 2023 amid an influx of Cuban migrants coming to the Florida Keys.
We're all in on this," DeSantis said Tuesday. "This is a force multiplier for the president's efforts.... There is no reason why other states can't be doing this.
