After Trump's election, Noem appointed him to run FEMA. He clashed with Noem and her de facto chief of staff, Corey Lewandowski, over efforts to prioritize immigration and proposals to shutter FEMA amid escalating wildfire and tornado damage. Lewandowski accused Hamilton of leaking a CNN report; Hamilton denied it.
