US Southern Command reported a pre-dawn seizure of the tanker Veronica, saying the raid occurred "without incident" and that the vessel was "operating in defiance" of an established quarantine. Six Venezuelan-linked tankers have been seized since mid-December, four after Nicolas Maduro was taken from Caracas to New York in a US military raid on January 3. Delcy Rodriguez assumed the interim presidency, and the Trump administration indicated Rodriguez may cooperate with US plans to control Venezuelan oil production, refining and distribution. Machado, a Nobel laureate who claims Maduro stole the 2024 election, sought to avoid offending Trump and offered to share her prize, which the Nobel Institute says is not allowed.
