The US Supreme Court intervened to stop the Trump administration's deportation of Venezuelan migrants under the Alien Enemies Act. This ruling came when some detainees were about to be flown out. Trump had utilized this 1798 law to label Venezuelan migrants as invaders linked to criminal gangs. The Court directed that no deportations occur until further notice, allowing the detainees the opportunity to contest their removal. The move supports ACLU's legal effort for immediate action, amid concerns over violating prior court orders and ongoing constitutional debates.
"The Government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this Court," the judges said in a brief, unsigned decision.
"They will be imminently removed under the AEA, as soon as tonight," the ACLU said in its emergency filing, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The present ruling will now allow the men to legally challenge their removal which they had not been permitted to do before the Supreme Court's intervention.
Conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito publicly dissented from the decision, indicating divisions within the Supreme Court on this controversial issue.
