"Troutman is currently the chief lobbyist for the American Cleaning Institute, a trade group representing cleaning product manufacturers including BASF, Dow and Procter & Gamble. If approved, he would oversee the EPA's office of chemical safety and pollution prevention. Among other responsibilities, the office evaluates the safety of new chemicals that industry wants to send to the market, re-evaluates the safety of previously approved chemicals and oversees the pesticides program."
"The lunatics are running the asylum, and industry is firmly in charge of chemical safety, said Scott Faber, vice-president of government affairs for the Environmental Working Group non-profit, which lobbies on chemical safety issues. They will stop at nothing to reverse the progress that we've made in recent years on toxic chemicals."
"He was among lobbyists for industry on the 2016 rewrite of Toxic Substances and Control Act, which was aimed at strengthening protections against toxic chemicals. However, industry successfully worked in loopholes that chemical makers and other producers have since exploited."
The US Senate is poised to approve Douglas Troutman, an industry lobbyist, to lead the EPA's chemical safety office. If confirmed, former chemical industry lobbyists would occupy the top four toxics positions at the EPA, raising fears for the health and safety of the American public, consumers, and workers. Troutman currently serves as chief lobbyist for the American Cleaning Institute, representing manufacturers including BASF, Dow and Procter & Gamble. He would oversee the office responsible for evaluating new chemicals, re-evaluating approved chemicals, and managing the pesticides program. Troutman supported industry positions during the 2016 TSCA rewrite, and industry has since exploited regulatory loopholes.
