The USTA National Tennis Center filed a claim in Manhattan State Supreme Court alleging the city failed to safeguard its long-term lease rights if the proposed Metropolitan Park casino wins a downstate gaming license near the tennis complex. The state Gaming Commission plans to award up to three licenses by year end. The USTA says lease rights, the U.S. Open and investments in facilities are jeopardized by the city's failure to uphold lease obligations. A mayoral spokesperson said the lawsuit is under review. The USTA emphasized the U.S. Open's long history in Queens and its $1.25 billion local economic impact, and stated it does not oppose development that benefits the city while seeking protections for the event's 23-day run.
