US: Mahmoud Khalil sues Trump administration for $20mln DW 07/11/2025
Briefly

Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student involved in pro-Palestinian protests, filed a $20 million claim against the Trump administration for wrongful imprisonment. Arrested in March and detained for three months, he asserts he was unjustly targeted for his activism. His claim includes allegations of malicious prosecution, false arrest, and the infliction of emotional distress. Khalil contends that his detention was intended to intimidate him and his family, resulting in emotional distress and damage to his reputation, and impairing his First Amendment and Fifth Amendment rights. The DHS spokesperson dismissed his claims as absurd.
The claim alleges Khalil was the victim of 'malicious prosecution and abuse of process, false arrest, false imprisonment, and negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress,' according to the Center for Constitutional Rights, which is supporting the Columbia graduate.
The Trump administration illegally arrested, detained, and planned to deport Khalil 'in a manner calculated to terrorize him and his family.' It adds that his mistreatment by US authorities is causing 'severe emotional distress, economic hardship, damage to his reputation, and significant impairment of his First Amendment and Fifth Amendment rights.'
