US Capitol Police: Member of Eric Jones' campaign investigated for surveilling Rep. Mike Thompson's Napa County home
"This is disturbing, Thompson said in a written statement. It scared my wife, my granddaughter who lives with us, and my neighbor who is a single woman living alone. Given the terrible attack on Paul Pelosi and the increase in political violence against public officials recently, it's hard to believe that anyone would think this was okay. I'm grateful to the law enforcement who have helped ensure my family and neighbors are safe and I remain focused on serving our community."
"Congressman Thompson is trying to manufacture an issue where none exists, a campaign spokesperson for Jones said. No theft occurred and there was no threat of any kind. This is a shameless attempt to divert attention from the fact that Mike Thompson is an outlier in his own party still taking money from Chevron, Philip Morris, and PG&E."
The U.S. Capitol Police investigated a 19-year-old volunteer linked to challenger Eric Jones for allegedly surveilling Rep. Mike Thompson's St. Helena home in October. Investigators identified the volunteer as Spencer Fields, a Nebraska native living in San Francisco, who told agents he was working as a volunteer. Thompson said the incident frightened his family and neighbors and cited recent political violence including the Paul Pelosi attack. The Jones campaign characterized the matter as a non-event, denied theft or threat, and blamed Thompson for manufacturing an issue, while Jones took responsibility for an over-enthusiastic volunteer and said the campaign addressed the matter internally.
