Boots is based on Greg Cope White's 2015 memoir The Pink Marine and follows a closeted gay teen's boot camp experience at Parris Island in 1990, before the implementation of "don't ask, don't tell." The eight-episode series, produced by Norman Lear, debuted earlier this month and has remained in Netflix's U.S. Top 10, currently ranked #2. Critical and fan response has been generally favorable, with at least one reviewer calling it a "recruitment ad" for the military. Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson criticized the series while touting Trump-era policies and asserting that military standards are elite, uniform, and sex-neutral.
