"In a political setback for President Donald Trump, the US Supreme Court has struck down most of his tariffs put in place over the last 13 months, saying they are unconstitutional. Specifically, the court decided in a 6-3 vote that the president exceeded his authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977 to implement many of his tariffs on US trading partners."
"In anticipation of the ruling, the US administration had made it clear it has been doing its homework for months. It is prepared to quickly implement new tariffs under other laws that allow the president to impose them. The US Supreme Court struck down most of President Trump's tariffs enacted over the last 13 months, finding them unconstitutional in a 6-3 decision. The court concluded the president exceeded authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977 to impose many tariffs on trading partners. The administration prepared contingency plans and stands ready to implement similar tariffs under other statutes that authorize presidential action. The United States Trade Representative indicated such tariffs could be reinstated almost immediately. Legal experts pointed to alternatives such as Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 and Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
