President Trump signed an executive order aimed at reducing the costs of in vitro fertilization (IVF) for Americans facing fertility issues. The order directs the Domestic Policy Council to examine current policies that contribute to the high costs of IVF. Health insurance companies are not mandated to cover these expensive treatments, which can exceed tens of thousands of dollars. Trump pledged that if reelected, the government would ensure coverage for IVF treatments, reflecting a contentious political landscape surrounding fertility issues that gained traction due to recent legal rulings.
"These are treatments that have become unaffordable for many Americans or been unaffordable for many Americans," Scharf said.
"Your government will pay for or your insurance company will be mandated to pay for all costs associated with IVF treatment," Mr. Trump said in August 2024.
Republicans support IVF, full stop," Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota stated, highlighting party unity on the issue despite legislative hurdles.
The issue of access to fertility treatments became a political flashpoint last February after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos were considered children under state law.
