Mamdani requested the meeting to discuss public safety, economic security and the affordability agenda that over one million New Yorkers voted for. Trump had previously slammed Mamdani, calling him a "communist," threatened deportation and to cut federal funds. Since the November elections Trump has shifted emphasis toward affordability, even declaring the GOP the "Party of Affordability." Mamdani was born in Uganda and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018. A spokesperson confirmed the meeting is customary for an incoming NYC mayor.
