Consideration is underway to deploy National Guard or federal troops to cities such as Chicago and New Orleans to combat violent crime and facilitate deportations of undocumented immigrants. New Orleans is identified as a Democratic-run city within the Republican-led state of Louisiana, and Governor Jeff Landry has invited federal assistance. Federalized troops entered Los Angeles in early June, and a federal judge issued a 52-page ruling finding that deployment illegal and barring troops from engaging in civilian law enforcement. Some 300 troops remain in Los Angeles under restrictions while the Department of Justice pursues an appeal.
