A reporter searched for paid agitators, federal plants, extremists and violent rioters but did not find any. Local witnesses disputed claims that protesters were paid or were federal agents. The Trump administration and some commentators characterized nationwide protests as criminal or unpatriotic, and some critics warned supporters about protesters' motives. The Fresno rally presented a largely peaceful, nonviolent crowd contrary to those claims.
