Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's special envoy, has shifted U.S. policy on Iran, now demanding the complete elimination of its nuclear program. This policy reversal complicates negotiations with Iran and revives fears of military intervention. Earlier, Witkoff suggested permitting low-level uranium enrichment for civilian purposes, but quickly retracted that position, stating that any agreement must ensure peace and stability in the Middle East. Upcoming indirect talks in Oman will continue as planned, emphasizing verification and scrutiny of Iran's enrichment practices and missile capabilities.
Witkoff stated, "A deal with Iran will only be completed if it is a Trump deal. Any final arrangement must set in place a framework for peace, stability and prosperity in the Middle East, meaning that Iran must stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weaponisation program."
Despite earlier articulating a more lenient position on uranium enrichment, Witkoff's recent comments demand total elimination of Iran's nuclear program, complicating negotiations.
