Trump ends some tariffs, imposes new 10% global one
"The White House said those tariffs "shall no longer be in effect and, as soon as practicable, shall no longer be collected." Trump, however, also said on Friday in a post on his Truth Social platform that he had the "Great Honor" to sign an order imposing 10% tariffs on global imports to be "effective almost immediately." The new 10% tariff is scheduled to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday (0601 Wednesday UTC/GMT)."
"Trump has routinely levied or threatened to levy such penalties on trading partners for a host of reasons ranging from vague claims of unfair treatment to attempting to influence foreign courts to help his political allies abroad. The US Constitution gives Congress the sole power to levy tariffs. In Friday's majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts declared, "The Framers [of the US Constitution] did not vest any part of the taxing power in the Executive Branch.""
Supreme Court struck down sweeping tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and ordered that certain emergency duties end and stop being collected. The White House said those tariffs shall no longer be in effect, while the president announced a new 10% tariff on global imports set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. The Court held that IEEPA does not authorize the president to impose tariffs and affirmed a lower court ruling that the president overstepped authority by unilaterally declaring punitive and reciprocal tariffs. Other presidents used IEEPA for sanctions, but this was the first use for import taxes.
