Trump calls off federal surge' to San Francisco
"The Federal Government was preparing to surge' San Francisco, California, on Saturday, but friends of mine who live in the area called last night to ask me not to go forward with the surge in that the Mayor, Daniel Lurie, was making substantial progress, Trump said in a Truth Social post. I spoke to Mayor Lurie last night and he asked, very nicely, that I give him a chance to see if he can turn it around."
"In a statement this morning, Lurie said Trump agreed to halt a federal deployment in a phone conversation on Wednesday night. In that conversation, the president told me clearly that he was calling off any plans for a federal deployment in San Francisco, Lurie said. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem reaffirmed that direction in our conversation this morning. Trump said that Lurie asked very nicely to allow the city to continue its efforts to fight crime without federal help."
President Donald Trump canceled plans to send federal forces, including a National Guard surge, to San Francisco after friends and Mayor Daniel Lurie urged him to hold off. Lurie confirmed a phone conversation in which the president said he was calling off any federal deployment, and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem reaffirmed that decision. Trump said he thought Lurie was making a mistake but credited local efforts and credited tech leaders Jensen Huang and Marc Benioff for wanting to give the city a chance. Crime rates in San Francisco and much of the Bay Area have declined after pandemic-related spikes.
