Trump said China respects strength and expressed a desire for a fair trade deal with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Trump threatened an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods starting Nov. 1, a date that coincides with an expected meeting with Xi at APEC. The tariff threat followed China's tightening of rules on rare earth mineral exports that require government licenses. Trump acknowledged the high tariff level may be unsustainable but said he gets along well with Xi.
