Trump and Musk want DOGE checks. Congress has other ideas.
Briefly

Trump and Musk's proposal to distribute savings as DOGE checks to taxpayers faces skepticism from GOP lawmakers. House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized fiscal responsibility, stating the need to address national debt before considering such payouts. Other Republicans echoed these sentiments, insisting on balancing the budget first. With Democrats largely opposing the DOGE initiative, its legislative prospects appear grim unless there's a shift among Republican perspectives. The ongoing budget discussions further complicate any potential implementation of the DOGE Dividend, signaling deep divides in fiscal policy priorities amongst lawmakers.
"I mean, politically, that would be great for us," Johnson said at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday. "But if you think about our core principles, right? Fiscal responsibility is what we do."
"If there's money left after we address inflation, and the debt, and the deficit, it's always a good idea to send taxpayers their money back," Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming told reporters.
Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky told reporters that he's "all for it after they balance the budget."
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas told Business Insider he'd "want to see the details" of the plan.
