In her recent address to the Wyoming Legislature, Sen. Cynthia Lummis extolled the Trump administration's policies, particularly the rollbacks of environmental protections and criticism of electric vehicles. While she hinted at newfound prosperity for Wyoming, the reality starkly contrasts with the ongoing job losses in the state due to federal employee terminations. Many of those laid off were probationary workers, rendering them ineligible for unemployment benefits, affecting local economies and essential services, notably in areas like the National Park Service, which faced hiring freezes. The long-term impact on communities may be profound as residents struggle to find work.
"Wyoming is going to enjoy the opportunity to be part of this great golden age," she said.
The administration terminated thousands of federal employees - including nearly 6,000 from the U.S. Forest Service and the Interior Department, affecting many in Wyoming.
Most of the fired employees were probationary, making it difficult for them to collect unemployment and support their families as they lost jobs.
This purge has deprived the state not only of a number of jobs but also of the many services the federal employees provided.
