Top Senate Republican Warns Democrats Could Flip Texas Seat if Ken Paxton Is the GOP Nominee

"Honestly, if you look at the polling in a general election setting, I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that the seat [flips], depending on who the Democrats nominate. Republicans are panicking about the prospect of a Paxton nomination, with national Republicans having spent months airing his dirty laundry all over Texas airwaves in an effort to boost Cornyn."

"In 2023, the Republican-controlled Texas House of Representatives voted to overwhelmingly impeach Paxton over accusations of bribery, dereliction of duty, and obstruction of justice. The attorney general was accused of using his office to help his friend and major political donor, Nate Paul, a Texas real estate developer, with Paul allegedly employing Paxton's mistress to keep her quiet in exchange for access to state records."

Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned that Republicans risk losing the Texas Senate seat if Ken Paxton becomes the Republican nominee. Paxton, the state attorney general, is challenging incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the March 3 primary, with a potential May runoff if no candidate achieves a majority. Recent polls show Paxton with a plurality, though neither candidate has secured a majority. Paxton was impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House in 2023 on charges of bribery, dereliction of duty, and obstruction of justice, accused of using his office to benefit a major donor and real estate developer. Republicans have already spent $100 million supporting Cornyn and worry about additional spending if Paxton wins the nomination.
