Mike Johnson appeared on CNN News Central and said California's proposed mid-decade redistricting would disenfranchise millions and criticized Governor Gavin Newsom's plan to redraw congressional maps. He contrasted California's effort with Republican-led mid-decade redistricting in Texas, which President Trump supported and which produced five districts more favorable to Republicans. California Democrats and Newsom aim to offset those gains but must first win voter approval of a ballot measure to let the legislature bypass the Citizens Redistricting Commission. CNN host John Berman objected to Johnson's disenfranchisement claim because voters will vote on the measure. State data show 24% registered Republicans, 47% Democrats, and 22% no party affiliation.
Gavin Newsom's gambit, which is what it is, is going to disenfranchize millions of California voters because they all supported their redistricting commission, the Citizens Redistricting Commission. He has to traverse and trample upon or shred the state constitution to do this.
Listen, 43% of the electorate in California is Republican, 14% of their delegation to Congress is Republican. They've already disenfranchized people. They've already gerrymandered. And it's interesting to me that Democrats who have been playing politics with redistricting for decades are now trying to lecture the red states.
They're gonna vote on it, he noted, It's not disenfranchizing if they can vote on it.
