The EPA is poised to reconsider a ruling from the Biden administration that banned chrysotile asbestos, a known carcinogen. This reconsideration follows a petition by the Texas Chemistry Council and could allow for the material's legal manufacturing once again. Asbestos exposure is linked to various cancers and over 40,000 deaths annually in the U.S. This shift marks a potential regression in chemical safety regulations that were previously strengthened to protect public health after decades of inadequate oversight.
Now, in response to a petition from the Texas Chemistry Council, it's possible that chrysotile asbestos will once again be a permissible manufacturing material.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, and laryngeal cancer, and it is linked to more than 40,000 deaths in the U.S. each year.
