"Over soaring music and B-roll of her gazing off at the mountains, Chiles describes Colorado's 2019 ban on conversion therapy as an attempt by lawmakers to "impose their own values" on her and her clients about "which goals" they can set."
""When I am actively having my speech chilled, then I can't be transparent and honest and genuine with my clients,""
The Supreme Court will hear Chiles v. Salazar, a challenge to state laws that ban licensed mental-health providers from giving minors conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is a pseudoscientific practice that aims to change sexual orientation or gender identity and is banned for minors in about half of U.S. states. Experts say the practice lacks scientific credibility and increases risks of depression, anxiety, suicidality, and other mental-health harms. The central legal question is whether those bans unlawfully restrict counselors' First Amendment rights to urge LGBTQ+ minors to pursue heterosexuality or cisgender identities. Advocacy groups have produced promotional videos for the petitioner portraying the bans as speech-chilling.
